Please share a memory of Floyd to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
MACDONALD, Floyd Charles
Age 89 years, of Lochaber Mines, passed away peacefully immediately following one last Toronto Blue Jays game on September 27, 2023, at the Aberdeen Hospital in New Glasgow.
Born on July 12, 1934, in Lochaber Mines, he was the son of John Alexander and Muriel Alexandra (Cameron) MacDonald. Industrious and multi-talented, Floyd began working as a young teenager at his maternal grandfather’s lumber camps along the Eastern Shore. A self-taught car mechanic, he apprenticed with Citadel Motors where he obtained his certification and later worked for Tanner Chrysler for many years. Descendant from a long line of lumbermen and carpenters, he built the family home and a cottage – cutting and lumbering from the land for the latter. “Papa” loved fishing and looked forward to the annual Sheet Harbour Ground Search and Rescue Fishing Derby with his son and grandsons every year. He conceptualized, developed and maintained Cliff’s Landing boat launch and recreation area on Marshall Flowage for over 30 years, allowing countless families to enjoy the waters and landscape he grew up on and knew so well. Floyd was a supportive and fair coach, not only to his own children but also for the Fairview and Sackville Minor Hockey Associations and was a lifelong Toronto Maple Leafs fan. An animated storyteller, Floyd brought his tales alive with humour, leaving everyone in tearful stitches, especially himself.
Missing that laugh and all the love he brought to us is his wife of 61 years, Marion (Richards) MacDonald of Lochaber Mines; son Brent (Josee) MacDonald, Lower Sackville; daughters Andrea (Duane) MacDonald, Cole Harbour and Cara MacDonald, Middle Sackville. Grandsons Zachary MacDonald, Cody (Cas) Rutledge, and Aaron (Alexandra) MacDonald. Great grandsons Lucas and Elijah. Brother Fred (Joanne) MacDonald, Kingston, ON; in-laws Faye (Ken) Vryenhoek, Joan (Lawrence) Deveau and Roy Richards; and many special nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, Floyd was predeceased by his siblings Alvin, Donald, Ronald (at birth), Merna, Faye, Florence, Avis, Adrien and Cora (in infancy) and his best friend Stan Hemens.
Friends and family are invited to a Celebration of Life for Floyd at the Sheet Harbour Legion on Saturday October 28, 2023, from 1pm – 3pm with prayers at 1:30pm. Internment to be held at a later undetermined date.
