Obituary of John Alexander Fitzgerald

It is with great sadness that the family of John Alexander Fitzgerald announces his passing on January 29, 2020 in Twin Oaks Memorial Hospital, Musquodoboit Harbour. Born in Cape Forchu, Yarmouth on August 12, 1918, he was a son of the late John and Margaret (Sweeney) Fitzgerald. As a young man, John moved to Halifax where he met his future wife, Josephine. The newlyweds relocated to Sheet Harbour, where they raised their five children. In Sheet Harbour, John worked as a Supervisor at the pulp mill until it closed. They then moved to Musquodoboit Harbour where John worked for the DOT and flew around the province via helicopter repairing lighthouses. On retirement, John could be found in his workshop doing woodworking for his many friends and family members. He also enjoyed playing cards, traveling, watching "The Price is Right" and his beloved Blue Jays. John was always there to lend a helping hand and enjoyed spending time with family and friends. John will be greatly missed by his sons, John (Mary), Truro; Richard (Jean), Dunnville, Ont.; daughters, JoAnn (Miles) Cameron, Spry Bay; Shirley (Joseph) Nardi, Surrey, B.C.; Sara Jane (Joe) Murphy, Port Hawkesbury; grandchildren, Jennifer (Chris), Ontario; Savayda (Philip), Myers Point; Chris (Angela), Truro; Natalia (Peter), Porters Lake; Christie (Perry), East Ship Harbour; Amanda (Nick), British Columbia; Marcia (Derrick), British Columbia; Kaylee (Andrea), Prince Edward Island; Brennan (Venus), Sydney; great-granddaughters, Amelia and Hilary, Truro; great-grandsons, Ryker and Declan, East Ship Harbour; and Zeno, British Columbia. Survived by half-sister, Ida Mason, Ontario; sisters-in-law, Helen Fitzgerald, Yarmouth; Rosemary Boutilier, Mushaboom; Linda MacKay, Enfield; Francis Webber, Middleton; brothers-in-law, Leslie Mason, Ontario; David Webber, Middleton; Daniel Wood, North Carolina. As well as many nieces, nephews and godchildren. He was predeceased by his loving wife of 68 years, Josephine (Power); stepmother, Gladys; sisters, Beatrice, Mabel; brother, Clifton; half-sisters, Audrey and Dorothy; half- brothers, Arthur and Kenneth. John will be sadly missed by his loving family and many friends. Funeral service will be held in St. Michael's Anglican Church, Sheet Harbour, on Wednesday February 5th at 11 a.m. Rev. Lorraine Otto officiating. Burial will be held in the church cemetery. Reception to follow in the Mushaboom Firehall, 22 Powers Rd., Mushaboom. Family flowers only. Donations can be made in memory to St. Michael's Anglican Church, Sheet Harbour. My father the late Duncan S. Crowell purchased the business on August 31, 1970 from the late Parker Hamilton. Dad named it Eastern Memorial Funeral Home until a few years later when he changed the name to DS Crowell Funeral Home.
