Obituary of Donald Colborne French
Age 84, Halifax, died De cember 12, 2019 in the Halifax Infirmary, QEII. Born April 11, 1935, in Flin Flon, Man., he was the only child of the late Elizabeth "Bessie" (Massicott) and Alexander French. Childhood spent in Pine Falls, Man., North Bay was his home after the early death of his parents. Donald was a long- term employee of Bell Canada (Ontario and Quebec regions). He was an avid curler, long-term member of the Burlington, Ont. Curling Club and a member of Montreal West Curling Club. He was an enthusiastic golfer, an ardent Hamilton Tiger Cats fan and a die-hard supporter of the Toronto Maple Leafs. Donald loved singing and reading poetry, entertained family and friends with his spirited rendition of poems, especially those of Robert Service. In 2005, Donald, with his wife, Susan (Perry), retired to Nova Scotia where he enjoyed learning first-hand about life in the Maritimes in general, and in Halifax and the Eastern Shore in particular. Donald is survived by his wife, Susan; sisters-in-law, Ruth Daye, Dartmouth; Jean Perry, CSJ, Peterborough, Ont.; and Leona Perry, Kamloops, B.C.; brothers- in-law, Robert Perry, Kamloops, B.C.; Auriel Day, Sheet Harbour; and nieces and nephews. Predeceased by brothers-in-law, Jim Perry, Bill Perry, and Cyril Daye; sister-in-law, Kaye Day; niece, Darlene Day; and nephew, Martin Day. Cremation has taken place. No visitation. Funeral mass at 11 a,m,, Thursday, December 19th, in St. Peter's Church, Sheet Harbour, Father Fabian officiating. Reception to follow in the Sheet Harbour Legion. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to charity of choice. Special thanks to Ethel Grier for her wonderful, caring services during the last four years, to Cindy Fricker for her time and caring services for three years, and to the health care team on the neurological services, Halifax Infirmary, QEII. My father the late Duncan S. Crowell purchased the business on August 31, 1970 from the late Parker Hamilton. Dad named it Eastern Memorial Funeral Home until a few years later when he changed the name to DS Crowell Funeral Home.
