Obituary of Mary Jewers
Please share a memory of Mary to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Age 89. It is with sadness we announce the passing of Rosella Mary Jewers of Halifax on December 30, 2024 in St. Vincent’s Nursing Home. Mary was born in Ecum Secum West December 4, 1935. She was a daughter of the late Charles and Ruby (Bernard) Jewers.
At an early age she moved to Halifax and found employment as a domestic housekeeper for several families. In the early 1970’s she was employed by Gertrude and Peter Deveau, where she stayed and lived until their passing in the early 2000’s. During those many years Mary became part of their “family”. During vacation and holiday breaks, Mary would return to Ecum Secum to visit her brothers and sisters.
Mary expressed a desire to stay in the same neighbourhood, so the Deveau’s daughter, Jean, and granddaughter, Nancy, found a nice apartment for her. Here Mary lived for 20 more years. Mary continued to be “part of the family” and celebrated many Birthdays, Christmases, and other occasions, with Jean and Nancy.
Mary was a member of Port Dufferin Eastern Star receiving her 25 year pin.
She was also a member of the Ladies Orange Benevolent Lodge in Ecum Secum and then in Halifax.
Mary enjoyed knitting, and over the years made many mittens for children, while being a member of Chebucto Links “Smitten for Mittens” program. She also loved doing Jigsaw Puzzles, and preferred the 1000 piece ones. Her little flower garden on her balcony gave her pleasure in the summer. She enjoyed watching TV; her favourites being game shows and early comedy shows. In her earlier years Mary was active in a bowling league, which she really enjoyed.
Mary is survived by her sister Carol (Morash) of Eastern Passage, and her niece, Cindy, and nephew, Scott. Mary was predeceased by her parents, and by her brothers, Edward, Sheldon, Victor and Wallace, and by her sisters, Linda and Charlotte.
Following Mary’s wishes, cremation has taken place.
Funeral service will be held Saturday January 18 at 2 pm at the Anglican Church of the Apostles,6670 Bayers Road, Halifax. (corner of Connaught). Rev. Mark Marshall officiating. Reception to follow.
We wish to thank the staff of St. Vincent’s Nursing Home, 5th Floor, for the excellent and compassionate service Mary received in the two months she was there before she passed away.
Donations may be made to St. Vincent’s Guest House or to a Charity of your choice.
Interment will be scheduled at a later date in Ecum Secum West.
