Obituary of Cora Violet Abriel
Abriel (Hawes) Cora Violet – We are broken-hearted to announce the passing of our beloved mother and Grammie who passed away at the QE11 on October 15, 2018 at the age of 87. Born February 19, 1931, she was the eldest daughter of the late Stanley and Edith (Gerrard) Hawes. After growing up and finishing school in Spry Harbour, she returned to the classroom to teach for a short time. In 1953 she married her true love Gordon and together they established Abriel Fisheries. Business associates easily became friends because of her hospitality and warmth.
She cherished the many gatherings at her home in Popes Harbour, the cottage and her vacation home in Port Charlotte, Florida. Family and friends were numerous and there were never too many people around. She welcomed everyone at the door and at the table. This of course gave her the opportunity to form many long-lasting friendships and memories. She loved her homes, which she took great pride in and even at 87 years, had a flair for decorating and making things look classy and nice.
Most important in her life were her 3 children, 8 grandchildren, and her great-grandson, Rhett, her 13 brothers and sisters, and numerous nieces and nephews. Her dedication and work ethic set an example for all to follow. She was the pure example of strength, courage, love, humour, and determination – never giving up in the face of difficulty. Our mother touched many lives, therefore leaving behind many family members and close friends who loved her dearly. She will be greatly missed by her daughters Violet (Earl) Munroe, Porter’s Lake, Corinne (Steve) Krichew, Musquodoboit Harbour, and son, John (Janet) Abriel, Pope’s Harbour, grandchildren, Kelly and Kyle Munroe, Nicholas, Caitlyn and Jeffrey Krichew, Meagan Abriel, Natalie (Sean) McKay and Andrew Abriel, and great-grandson, Rhett McKay. She will also be lovingly remembered by sisters Lois (Don) Goodfellow, Rita (Ray) Webb, Connie (Rich) Owens, Velda (George) LeFrank, Brenda Mason, Darlene Whitman, and brothers, Sheldon (Faye) Hawes, Stuart (Bliss) Hawes and sister-in-law Georgina Hawes. She was predeceased by her husband, Gordon, brothers, Wallace, Curtis, Sherman, Orrin and David Hawes, sister-in-laws, Ada, Anne, Connie and Darlene Hawes, brother-in-laws, Terry Mason and Herbert Whitman, nephew Faron Hawes and niece, Julie Owens. She was a loving sister to 13 siblings, a beautiful wife and mom, and was Grammie to her deeply treasured grandchildren and great-grandchild. A special thank-you to Aunt Georgina for always being there for our mother.
