Rebecca Mae Gerrard passed away at 101
Gerrard Rebecca Mae “Becky” 101, Sheet Harbour passed away Saturday, February 24, 2024, in Harbourview Lodge Sheet Harbour. Born in Necum Teuch on December 8, 1922, she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Minerva (Minnie) (Hartling) Romkey. Becky moved to Gerrard Island as a young teacher where she taught in a one-room schoolhouse. There she met her husband Norman and married. They settled in Spry Harbour and raised 6 children. She started a home care business for the Eastern Shore which now continues on today. She ran a gift shop in Popes Harbour and was known for her delicious fudge. She was very active with the Anglican church women, she was a songwriter, storyteller, and babysitter. She made quilts, beautiful angels, and hats. She would knit and loved to sew and played harmonica and guitar where she entertained her children on those long winter nights and when she was done, she would tell the children “no fools no fun”. She was an excellent baker and gave a lot of her baked goods and crafts away. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Survived by children Anita (Jack) MacKinnon, Roger, and Linda Lowe all of Dartmouth. Theodore (Kathy) Spry Harbour, Cedric (Jing) Calgary, and son-in-law Doug Bowes. Grandchildren Cadell Cameron, Shelley (Joel), John (Jennifer), Janice (Shawn), Leah (Glen), Eddie (Mindy), Bradley (Tiffane), Sandy, Andre (Suzanne), Travis, and Carl. 16 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by husband Norman, daughter Dorothy Gerrard Bowes, son-in-law Dale Lowe, sisters Pauline MacDonald, Lillian Lewis, Marybell Neiley, brothers Alexander, John, and Howard. No visitation by request. Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 2nd at 2:30 pm in St Andrews Anglican Church Spry Harbour. Reverand Debra Burleson officiating, burial in the church cemetery. Reception to follow in the Tangier Fire Hall. Family flowers only, donations in her memory may be sent to St Andrews Anglican Church or the Red Cross.

My father the late Duncan S. Crowell purchased the business on August 31, 1970 from the late Parker Hamilton. Dad named it Eastern Memorial Funeral Home until a few years later when he changed the name to DS Crowell Funeral Home.
