Angus Evan Smiley Obituary

Smiley, Angus Evan of Port Dufferin, Nova Scotia, died peacefully in his sleep, on November 6, 2023, in his 85th year. After retiring from a career in the Royal Canadian Air Force, where he flew search and rescue missions on Sea King helicopters, Angus found a second career as one of the last lighthouse keepers in Canada. He worked at several lighthouses over the years, including Boar’s Head on Long Island, before retiring in 1998 from his posting on Machias Seal Island. Angus was a tinkerer by nature, and enjoyed fixing and building things in his workshop, but he also had a more expressive side. He always had a joke to share or a story to tell to anyone who crossed his path, and was particularly fond of reciting poetry and singing along to country and western songs, happy even if he was sometimes a little out of tune. Angus is survived by his devoted wife of 54 years Janice (MacNevin); his three daughters Heather Smiley, Sandra (Mark) Trimble, and Noelle Smiley; his two grandchildren Dillon and Amelia Trimble; and sister Glenda Botten. He was predeceased by his parents John “Jack” and Dorothy (Sheirs) Smiley. Visitation will be held Thursday November 9 from 7-9pm in St. James Anglican Church, Port Dufferin. Funeral Service will be held at St. James Anglican Church in Port Dufferin on Friday 10 November at 11:00 am Rev. Dr. Mike Foley officiating. In lieu of flowers please make a donation to the Last Post Fund (https://www.lastpostfund.ca/) or the Salvation Army. Online condolences may be directed to www.crowellsfuneralhome.ca
