Mike was a wonderful man and very welcoming soul. My kids loved having Mike involved with school either being a substitute teacher or being there for broom ball.
No matter where you where and Mike was there, he made sure to come and speak to you.
My family is so grateful to been able to say we knew Mike.
Mike was truly one of kind. He will be missed but not forgotten by lots

We could not ask for better people then you and Mike. You both maybe sure everyone was care for/invite to.

I was very sorry to hear of Mike’s passing. I knew him before I moved away from Sheet Harbour and had the great pleasure of playing basketball with him for a few years afterward. He was a true gentleman on & off the floor - an all around good person who made everyone around him better just by being there. Sincere condolences to Charlene and the rest of Mike's family. He will be greatly missed.

Mike and I were childhood friends in Saint John and although he moved to Nova Scotia, I consider him a life-long friend. Mike was adventurous and excelled in many sports and was a good sportsman. He got along well with everyone. Mike valued relationships and experiences. He was loyal, empathetic and a good listener. He had a great sense of humor and could laugh at his own mistakes. I consider myself fortunate to have shared so many memorable years with Mike and those times will never be forgotten.

10 years ago I dreadfully moved to the small community of East Ship Harbour. It didn't feel like home to me and I was convinced it never would.
I was completely wrong - because of people like Mike - I came to love this community and I'm proud to call it my home. Our kids LOVED seeing Mike, Sissy and the dogs on our evening walks and those walks were and will always be "to Mike and Sissys and back". We were always welcomed to their beautiful home where Mike and Sissy had a beautiful yard that you'd always see Mike putting around in. They included our kids in every holiday and being in Mikes presence you would always learn something new ( he loved to teach new things)
The saying "It takes a village..." is sooo true for our community and we were so lucky to have Mike in that village. Sissy- we will continue to be your village.
Our hearts are broken.

When I was in grade two, I had the pleasure of being a student of Mr. Mackinley’s. The classroom across from ours had a cellphone ringing inside. Uncle Mike stopped what he was doing, went to his desk, began searching in his lunch bag, and pulled out a banana. He put the banana up to his ear like a banana phone and said “Hello”. Our class thought that was the funniest thing that had ever happened. I also remember when Sissy came in the last day of school that year, as it was his last year teaching full time. Uncle Mike left to go somewhere maybe the bathroom? I’m unsure, but Kori showed our class how she could wrap a metre stick behind her, then step over it as she was double jointed. Well Sissy tried to do this, only instead of stepping over the metre stick, she accidentally stepped on it and it snapped. She told us not to tell Mr. Mackinley, but as soon as he walked in that’s the first thing we did. Said metre stick was put back together with masking tape and used throughout the school, and whenever Uncle Mike would substitute and he’d see that metre stick, he’d let out a little chuckle. He was an amazing teacher and an amazing uncle, who will be missed dearly.

Mr. MacKinley was the best teacher I ever had. He taught me at Robert Jameson and Oyster Pond Academy. He was the first one who had taught us about color blindness and told us it was okay to be different. I had seen him a few years later and he still remembered me. He had the most genuine and kind soul. My condolences to the family. May you know what an impact he had on those he taught.
