Obituary of Helen Marion Miller

Helen Marion Miller, at the age of 91, died peacefully on Friday, February 17th, 2023. Born in Sheet Harbour, Nova Scotia on August 12th, 1931, Helen lived a full life and touched all those who knew her. She was the daughter of the late Ella (Behie) and Walter Miller of Sheet Harbour, NS. She graduated from the Halifax Infirmary School of Nursing and worked as a registered nurse at the Sheet Harbour Hospital. Helen later received a diploma in Public Health Nursing from Dalhousie University in Halifax, NS, and worked for the VON in Pictou. She also managed the Easter Seal hanicapped children’s clinic for the CRCD and traveled as a Public Health Nurse.
Helen took early retirement at the age of 55 to care for her mother, Ella. She loved to travel, and spent time throughout Canada, in England, Scotland, and Spain. She also made many visits to the U.S., spending time with her family. Helen was an experienced seamstress and enjoyed golfing, gardening, walking, and baking. She lived in the original family home until the summer of 2022 and did a wonderful job maintaining it over the years.
She was a lifelong member of the St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Sheet Harbour.
She is preceded in death by her brother, Walter “Gerry” Miller, mother, Ella Miller, and father, Walter Miller. She is survived by her nieces and nephews, Michael Miller of St. Petersburg, FL; Christine Powers of Santa Rosa Beach, FL; Peter Miller of Washington, PA; Mark Miller of Centennial, CO; David Miller of Oil City, PA; Margaret Womacks of Cincinnati, OH; and Marie Perry of Ponte Vedra Beach, FL, and her very good friend Doris Rafuse.
Visitation will be held Thursday May 4 from 7-9pm in DS Crowell & Son Funeral Home 22558 Highway 7, Sheet Harbour. A funeral mass will be held 10:30AM on Friday, May 5th at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Sheet Harbour, Nova Scotia. Following mass, there will be a burial service at the St. Peter’s Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please donate in Helen’s name to the Harbour View Lodge or Eastern Shore Memorial Hospital in Sheet Harbour.

My father the late Duncan S. Crowell purchased the business on August 31, 1970 from the late Parker Hamilton. Dad named it Eastern Memorial Funeral Home until a few years later when he changed the name to DS Crowell Funeral Home.
