Obituary of Lauretta Baker

Lauretta, age 90, passed away in Highcrest Nursing Home, Sherbrooke on July 28, 2021 where she had been a resident for seven and a half years. She was a daughter of the late James and Bessie (Baker) Reid and was born in Liscomb on December 9, 1930 and lived there all of her life except for a short time in Pictou County when she cooked in a lumber camp. She also worked in Redmond Lobster Factory and local corner stores. Lauretta was a lifelong member of St. Luke’s Anglican Church, Liscomb where she taught Sunday school for over 30 years, was a member of the choir, altar guild, church treasurer and a member of the Willing Workers. She participated in the Terry Fox run for over 25 years, volunteered at Highcrest for 25 years, was a member of the St. Mary’s Garden Club and volunteered at the schools her children attended. She was recognized as Volunteer of the Year by the various organizations where she volunteered. She participated in the St. Mary’s Senior Games for 25 years and very proudly displayed her 33 medals. She enjoyed playing cards, weiner roasts, quilting, knitting, gardening, clam digging and picking wild flowers and berries. Her home was always a gathering place for the local children. She is survived by her daughters, Nancy M. (Gerry) Archibald, Fall River; Vera (Dana) Dean, Castor, Alta.; Marcia (Peter) Murray, Middle Sackville and her son, John (Shelley), Spanish Ship Bay. She adored her grandchildren, Eugene, Fall River; Nadine (Drew) Arnold, Truro; Louella Dean, Castor, Alta.; Zoe Murray, Middle Sackville; Abby Baker, Spanish Ship Bay. She enjoyed spoiling her great-granddaughters, Sofia and Ava Arnold, Truro. She has numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Capt. Maxwell L. Baker; her infant daughter, Barbara; her grandson, Geoffrey Dean; her sister, Vivian Hartling and brother, Weldon Reid. Visitation will be on Monday, August 2nd from 4-8 p.m. A private funeral will be held on Tuesday, August 3rd at 2 p.m., both in St. Luke’s Anglican Church, Liscomb, service conducted by Rev. Susan Salter. Family flowers only. Donations may be made to St. Luke’s Cemetery Fund c/o M. Wilson, 63 Wilson’s Rd. R.R. # 1, Liscomb, NS B0J 2A0 or a charity of your choice. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, masks must be worn and social distancing will be in place.
