Obituary of John Wilson Monk
Please share a memory of John to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
It is with deep sadness that the family of John Wilson Monk announce his passing on Friday, May 8, 2026, at Opal Ridge Hall Long Term Care at the age of 85.
Born in East Ship Harbour on December 14, 1940, John was a son of the late Clive and Marguerite (DeWolfe) Monk.
John began his working life at EMI Cossor before attending Vocational School, where he completed the Machinist Course. Following this, he travelled throughout Nova Scotia tuning pipe organs, a craft he greatly enjoyed. He later worked as a clerk with the Registry of Motor Vehicles until his retirement.
John’s greatest loves were his wife Sylvia, his children, his grandchildren, and his extended family. Beyond family, he had a deep love of good food, tending his gardens, and his faith. He also had a soft spot for his “grand-pooches,” Linus and Pepper, who never failed to brighten his day.
He had a remarkable knack for making people laugh and remained unfailingly pleasant — even when he was not feeling his best. He was known for his warm smile and an even better grin. Nothing made him happier than welcoming someone in and offering them a snort or a pint of beer. He had a special way of making people feel wanted and at home.
The family will forever cherish the wheelchair dance parties he shared with Trent and Anna at Veteran Memorial Hospital, the countless meals Tyler faithfully delivered to “Johnny Boy,” the day the Opal Ridge Hall staff convinced him to go out and play chocolate bar bingo, and the proud afternoons he spent showing nurses the DVDs of talent shows, beaming as he pointed himself out playing guitar.
John is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Sylvia; sons, Matthew (Ashley), Fall River, and Luke (Kim), Dartmouth; cherished grandchildren, Oliver, Emerson, Jack, Merrigan, and Louisa; sister Kathleen (Ian) Josey; sister Linda (Seldon); brother Arthur: many nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by brothers Reid, Roy, and Clive Jr.; sisters Carol Fahie, Anne Hawes, Jennine Cross, Claudia and Janet; and sister Elizabeth in infancy, step-mother Marie, special aunt Bertha (Bub) DeWolfe.
The family wishes to extend heartfelt thanks to the many healthcare teams who cared for John over the past thirteen months, including the staff of the Victoria General, the Halifax Infirmary, the Abbie J. Lane Memorial Building, and Camp Hill Veterans’ Memorial. Special thanks are extended to the doctors, surgeons, infectious disease team, and to the nurses who became like family — especially Amanda, Alvin, Arienne, Audrey, Evelyn, and Kaylee.
A particular thank you is shared with the wonderful staff at the Abbie J. Lane and Camp Hill Veterans’ Memorial, who clearly saw something special in him and gifted him a collection of affectionate nicknames along the way — “Monk the Hunk,” “Johnny Boy,” “Papa Smurf,” “Popeye,” “King Monk,” “Monkey See Monkey Do,” and “Jack.” Every one of them was a little love note.
Deep gratitude is also extended to the entire team at Opal Ridge Hall Long Term Care, especially the staff of Sawmill Court, the neighborhood he called home. Heartfelt thanks to Princess, Emily, Joanne, and the many other caregivers whose kindness and compassion will never be forgotten. A special thank you to the nurse who cared for John through his final hours, checking on him often and ensuring he remained comfortable — her kindness will always be remembered.
In keeping with John’s wishes, there will be no visitation, a funeral service will be held Tuesday May 19 at 2pm in St. Peters RC Church, Sheet Harbour with burial to follow in St. Denis Cemetery, East Ship Harbour, reception to follow in the St. Denis Church Hall.
