Please share a memory of Elmer to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
It is with deep sadness that the family of Elmer Lewis Naugler, age 98, of Sheet Harbour, announce his passing on Friday, March 27, 2026, at Eastern Shore Memorial Hospital. Born in Moser River on March 13, 1928, he was a son of the late Walter and Lucinda (Sharpe) Naugler. Elmer’s life was marked by hard work, dedication, and a deep connection to his community. His first job was milking cows at home and for neighbouring families in Moser River. In his early years, he hauled firewood with oxen and later worked at the Lewis Mill in the lumber yard. Over the years, Elmer held many roles, including working at various sawmills sawing lathes, driving taxi in the Sheet Harbour area, and helping build hydro dams with the Power Commission. He also worked in the wood camps as a cookee for his father, was employed with Standard Paving in Dartmouth, and later served his community through his work with the Halifax County School Board as both a custodian and a bus driver. In his spare time, Elmer cut hair for friends and neighbours and found great joy in the outdoors. He loved hunting, fishing, and tending to his vegetable gardens. Elmer is survived by his children: Lucinda “Lucy” (Kenneth) Josey, Spry Bay; David, Sheet Harbour; Robert (Mary) Naugler, Sheet Harbour; Christine Connors, Dartmouth; John (Norma), Cold Lake, Alberta; Kathy (Teddy) Gerrard, Spry Harbour; and Donald (Irene Power), Malay Falls. He is also survived by his brother George (Ruth), Truro; sisters Isabel Carter, Truro; and Margaret Rutledge, New Glasgow; as well as 10 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, and 9 great-great-grandchildren. He will be fondly remembered by his special friend, Butch. Besides his parents, Elmer was predeceased by his beloved wife, Barbara; sister Edna MacKenzie; brother Ian; three grandchildren; and son-in-law Earl Connors. Visitation will be held on Monday, March 30, from 7–9 p.m., with prayers at 7:30 p.m. A funeral service will take place on Tuesday, March 31 at 2:00 p.m., both held at DS Crowell & Son Funeral Home, 22558 Highway 7, Sheet Harbour. Burial will follow in St. James United Church Cemetery, with a reception afterward at the Sheet Harbour Legion. The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to Dr. Don MacDonald, the nurses of Eastern Shore Memorial Hospital, Northwood Homecare, and all hospital staff for their compassionate care. Family flowers only. Donations in Elmer’s memory may be made to St. James United Church, Sheet Harbour.
