

Obituary of Emerson Graham Bligh

Dr. Emerson “Graham” Bligh
Age 96, of Dartmouth, NS, passed away peacefully on December 2, 2025, at Ivy Meadows in Beaverbank. Born in Lakeville, NS, he was the son of the late Emerson and Creta (Graham) Bligh.
Graham earned his PhD in Biochemistry from McGill University in 1956 and went on to a distinguished career as a research scientist and lecturer, specializing in food science. He was internationally recognized for his pioneering work and widely traveled to present on his patented Bligh-Dyer Extraction Method, a technique still taught and applied today.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Graham was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He cherished time at the family cottage and always considered the Valley his true home.
He is survived by daughters Karen Miller (Quispamsis, NB), Cathy (Robert) Piccott (Lakelands, NS), and Lynn (Fred) Dube (Moncton, NB); grandchildren Kim and Heather Piccott, Christine and Wendy Richards, Angela Somers, and Matthew Miller; six great-grandchildren; nephew Brian (Sue) Bligh (Lakeville, NS); sister-in-law Saundra Milner; niece Ann Milner; and nephew Philip Milner (Clearwater, FL). He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 68 years, Jeanne (Milner); brother Thomas (Audrey); and brothers-in-law Rev. William “Bill” (Doris) Milner and Robert “Bob” Milner.
Burial will take place Tuesday, December 9, at 2pm in Lakeview Cemetery, Lakeville, NS.

My father the late Duncan S. Crowell purchased the business on August 31, 1970 from the late Parker Hamilton. Dad named it Eastern Memorial Funeral Home until a few years later when he changed the name to DS Crowell Funeral Home.
