Obituary of David Allan MacKinnon
Please share a memory of David to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
It is with deep grief that I announce the passing of David Allan MacKinnon, 49, of Sheet Harbour, NS. He passed away on April 19th, 2024, in Alberta South Hospital, Calgary, Alberta.
David was born in Halifax, NS, to Allan Wilmur Mackinnon and Mary-Jean (Croft) Perkins on June 14th, 1974. He went to Duncan MacMillan High and then CDI College where he took a truck driving course. David was a dedicated truck driver for most of his life. He began his career with Gerald Battist Trucking Ltd in NS. He then moved to Ft McMurray where he drove tandem dump trucks. He then made his way to Calgary and was employed for over a decade with Mike Vail trucking. Driving was his passion.
David was a long-term resident at Oxford House Foundation of Canada in Calgary. During this period, he extended his personal time, energy and generosity as an outreach worker, finding great purpose in helping and supporting the foundation and the men he resided with.
He loved camping and fishing. He loved to cook. He loved all genres of music. His religious beliefs were rooted in Indigenous Spirituality.
David had a solid reputation for being generous with friends, family and loved ones. His loyalty to his peers was unconditional and David always put others before himself. He was his sister’s personal guru. One only has to see his FB posts to see the messages of positivity and his particular brand of humor. David will be missed for his caring and positive impact on many. May he continue to rest in peace.
David is survived by his sister, Lisa Kitchen (Andrew) of Halifax; Niece, Fiona; Nephews, Finn and Grady; his longtime friend, Lesley Sambu.
David was predeceased by his father, Allan MacKinnon; Mother, Mary-Jean Perkins; Stepfathers Walter and Ken; Grandparents
Many thanks to the Staff at Alberta South Hospital for their care of David in his final months. Donations may be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association or the Oxford House Foundation of Canada.
