Obituary of Inez Mary MacKenzie

Please share a memory of Inez to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Inez Mary MacKenzie (née Currie) passed away peacefully on May 20, 2025. Born on September 16, 1922 in Niagara on the Lake, Ontario, she was the daughter of Franklin and Edith Currie. Predeceased by her loving husband of 73 years, Arthur MacKenzie, she is survived by son Scott (Debbie), grandsons Ryan and Craig, daughter, Anna MacDonald (Stuart) and granddaughters Lauren and Claire, cousins Garry, Richard and Betty Jean, niece Dianne (Marcel). Inez trained as a nurse at The Mack School of Nursing in St. Catharine's, Ontario and was the last surviving member of the Class of ‘45. After marrying Art, Inez moved to Nova Scotia, nursing at Pier 21, and nursed with Dr. Duncan MacMillan before there was a Hospital in Sheet Harbour. She served as the first Administrator of the Eastern Shore Memorial Hospital completing her career as Director of Nursing in 1987. She was introduced to volunteering by her parents, growing up in Niagara-on-the-Lake where she was a member of two Guides troops, the CGIT and Young Peoples. Once in Nova Scotia volunteering was her passion. She started the choir at St. James Anglican and began the first Hospital Auxiliary in the area. She was President of the UCW, President of the New Horizons Seniors for 12 years and Vice President of the Nova Scotia Federation of Seniors. She was a founding member of the Harbour Lioness Club serving as President twice and was District Lioness President for Nova Scotia in 1986. In 2014, she continued to serve as a Lions Club member totalling 49 years of service in Lionism. Inez enjoyed meeting people and attending functions with her husband Art and often spoke of being introduced to Queen Elizabeth II as a highlight. In her 101st year she was awarded the Sovereign's Medal for Volunteers. Inez will be remembered for her strong dedication to her community. The family wish to express their sincere gratitude to Joan, Joy, Debbie, and Jill who provided such care and compassion for Mom, allowing her to stay in her own home for many years. We will be forever grateful. Visitations to be held at D S Crowell Funeral Home in Sheet Harbour Friday May 23, 2-4pm and 7-9 pm with a Lions Memorial Service at 7:30 pm followed by prayers. Celebration of Life will be held at St. James United Church in Sheet Harbour on Saturday, May 24th at 11 am with Rev. Glenn MacLean officiating. Reception to follow at the Sheet Harbour Lions Center with later committal at Pope’s Harbour United Church. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Inez’ name can be made to the Lions Foundation of Nova Scotia.
