Valerie and Sterling have a special place in my heart and I was blessed to visit them last in September 2023. My parents, John and Kathie Hryhoriw (Higgins) enjoyed many summers in Moose River way back when and in particular visits with Valerie and (cousin) Sterling. I reached out to Valerie after my mom died and dad and I brought her ashes for interment in Higginsville from Ontario. She was so gracious to host a lunch for us afterward. To all of Aunt Valerie’s family my deepest condolences. I will carry fond memories of all the family time we had together growing up. From our times at the cottage, the family beach, including her making my cake for my wedding she was an amazing lady.

Our sincerest condolences to Uncle Sterling and the whole family. Aunt Valerie was such a big part of my life growing up whether it was us spending time in Mooseland, time together or with the whole Kennedy clan at the cottage or her visits in the city. She was a great big sister to my mom and I have so many memories that I will treasure. She was also a very talented seamstress/dressmaker. I still have my flower girl dress from Judy’s wedding, as well as my Grade 9 prom dress.<br>She lived a wonderful long life, but it’s still hard to believe she’s gone. Rest in Peace Aunt Valerie. You will be dearly missed.

Bruce and I and our family wish to express our sincerest condolences to Auntie Valerie’s family for the loss of their precious Mom, grandmom, great grandmother and dear friend. She was a very special person and dearly loved by everyone who knew her. Sincerely Faye (mother Helen Kennedy Doucette Harry’s Kennedy’s eldest daughter) and Bruce Rose, brother Barry and sister Connie Doucette. Sadly we will miss the funeral for Valerie but she will be in our hearts and thoughts tomorrow.

Valerie was the teacher who inspired me. She made learning fun and in a room with six grades to teach seemed to handle it with ease. I remember when Christmas would be on the horizon, she would take us walking over to Bears Lake to find pine cones to paint for tree decorations. We had wonderful Christmas concerts and to this day I still don’t know who she got to play Santa. She taught us so much; we had a choir because of her, Sunday School every Friday at school, she arranged film days from the National Film Board of Canada and of course Lands and Forests and Smokie the Bear. She was more than just a teacher, she was a friend and advisor. Rest in peace Valerie. My condolences to Sterling, Wade and Barry and their families.

Aunt Valerie helped make me the person I am today. Everytime I wipe a child's nose, I think of the kleenex on our desks. When I ask them if they washed their little hands, I think of our daily hand and nail inspections. When we thank God for the food we eat each day, I think of The Lord's Prayer which we said every morning. Aunt Valerie helped us stay grounded. She provided a foundation to build on. I am proud that she was my first teacher, my Aunt. I loved and respected her for all the magical Christmas moments she gave to us. They are memories that no one else will ever top. It is impossible.

Dear Prest Family, I send condolences as you grieve the loss of Valerie. Celebrating her love for family and her life’s accomplishments are part of this time. My grandmother, Melvina Prest Bruce, grew up in Mooseland. We last saw Valerie and Sterling at a Bruce family reunion in Kennetcook. As part of our extended family, I was really happy to meet this lovely couple who were accompanied to Kennetcook by Barry and Delfina. My mother, Mildred Bruce MacAskill , died in February 2018. It certainly is a different world when folks like Valerie and my Mum are gone. I shall pray for Sterling and all the Prest family. Blessings to all who love Valerie, Dawn MacAskill Cumming.
