David MacDonald

Age 81 of Sheet Harbour, passed away peacefully at home in the early hours of May 5, 2020 following a brief illness. Born in Sheet Harbour November 18, 1938, he was a son of the late Stanley and Dorothy (Cooper) MacDonald. Following his older brothers, David left home as a young man and joined the air force with the rank of Master Corporal as an air technician for over 25 years. He was stationed in Gimli, Man., Greenwood and Shearwater. His career took him around the world and we all loved his stories of incredible adventures, also with his career with the air force David became a master diver and was often called out on missions with search and rescue, yet he loved diving for recreation and always came back with fishtails and a big bag of scallops. Upon retirement, David, Colleen and Randy moved back home to Sheet Harbour where he and Colleen became part-time employees of the local RCMP detachment for 15 years. David will be missed in the Sheet Harbour Remembrance Day parade where he would be driving his restored 1942 Willie's Jeep, which he rebuilt over the years as a retirement project. David loved the outdoors and some of his favourite times were hunting and fishing with Randy and many friends. You could always find him outside in God's church, he always got his deer but in the later years he just liked to see them run. He also was an avid Montreal Canadiens fan. Survived by his beloved wife, the former Colleen (Crane); son, Randy (Ashley Wilson); daughters, Donna MacDonald Sharpe (Chester), Laura Bent (Buddy); grandchildren, Jason, Garrett, Ashley and Shawna; brothers, Darrell, Stanley (Betty), Patrick (Betty), and Ronald; sister, Dorothy Layden. Predeceased by brothers, Bernard and John; sisters, Virginia Kelly, Frances Duffey and Rosanne Boudreau. Cremation has taken place. Burial will take place at a later date in St. Peters Roman Catholic Cemetery. Donations in David's memory may be made to Sheet Harbour Ground Search and Rescue, PO Box 171, Sheet Harbour or Eastern Shore Memorial Hospital. It certainly was with sadness to hear of Dave's passing. My deepest sympathy to Colleen and family.. Dave and Colleen were some of the first people I met on coming to Sheet Harbour and posted to the local Detachment. IThey were a main stay cleaning and guard duty at the office. I quickly learned of his past career in the Air Force, his involvement with Ground Search & Rescue and mostly his love for hunting. It wasn't long before we were making hunting trips together and on search calls. A great supporter of our Annual Fish Derby and was there to do whatever had to be done. He took great pride, and rightfully so in his Jeep. He joined our local Antique Car Club and was always there to display the Jeep at local car shows, Legion events and parades especially Remembrance Day. He and Don Sharpe could be seen driving through the harbour. The door was always open for a coffee and he and Colleen were familiar faces at the Irving Garage. Still see him on his four wheeler when we would go on runs wearing that helmet with the RCAF crest on it.. Dave thank you for your service to GSAR and the community you will be missed. I want to pass on my sincere condolences to Coleen, Randy and the MacDonald Family for their loss. Dave was a true friend and I remember visiting with him and Coleen "at the trailer" on their weekend visits during my younger years growing up in Sheet Harbour. We had many adventures on the skidoos and I have to say that Dave MacDonald, you were a big influence on me joining the CAF in 1978 and I thank you for that as it certainly turned my life around! I'm glad that I got the chance to visit with you and Coleen in Sep 2018, rest in peace my friend, you'll never be forgotten! John Naugler

Dave's family: I was so sorry to hear of Dave's passing, such a nice guy.I'm so thankful I had the opportunity to catch up with him when Bernice had passed away. We talked about old fishing trips and the family home and people living close by. Although Dave was older,he,his mother and his siblings always took the time to be nice, play or interact with the younger kids around. My thoughts and prayers are with you all during this sad and difficult time in your lives. Kind Regards: Charlie A. Verge

Sad to hear of P.D.'s passing. We were stationed together at RCAF Stn Gimli in the '60s...and later drove him home from the hospital in Stadacona when he was stationed in CFB Greenwood. We first met in the Mess at Gimli over a few beers on a Friday evening during TGIF and when we discovered we were both from N.S....Dave from Sheet Harbour and me from Moser River, we became great friends. Rest in Peace Dave. Until we meet again. Per Ardua Ad Astra.
